How to wear glitter without looking too over the top: 3 Beauty Panel tips and tricks

Sparkly ornamentation made its beauty mark this spring—courtesy Marchesa and Christian Dior—and there’s no doubt that glitter accents will continue to trend throughout fall. At the forefront of our favourite shimmering looks was the bedazzled statement look that Peter Philips created for Chanel. Whereas brows got all the glitter in 2012, for Fall 2013 Philips brought the focus back to the eyes, making them twinkle with silver sequined appliqués.

When it comes to duplicating the glitter look at home, it can be tricky to keep the look more runway glam and less like you’re going to a rave. While the Chanel look was impressive, the best bet for some DIY shimmer is to keep it subtle. To help advise, we turned to the Beauty Panel and asked them to show us how they incorporate a little bit of glitter into your beauty routine.

Challenge 23: How do you wear glitter makeup without looking too over the top? See the answers now! »

Incorporating some shimmer to your day-to-day makeup routine doesn’t have to consist of covering up your eyelids with a pot of glitter. Aïda Michelle Lopes of Fell For That kept her glitter application simple: she added a touch of shine by dazzling up the inner corners of her eyes. Meanwhile, My Beauty Box’s Ellie Somfelean used green sparkly eyeliner to not only add colour but sparkles to her look, creating a beauty look fit for an underwater princess. For those who are looking for a subtler glittery look, Toronto’s Beauty Reviews’ Elaine Atkins recommends using a touch of shimmery eyeshadow. Going for a warmer gold shade, Elaine achieves the a sweet sparkly effect without making it look too overpowering.

When I incorporate glitter in my make up I like to keep is simple and small like a little touch of glitter here and there. My favorite way to do it is to add a little glitter in the inner corner of my eyes when I have a smoky eyes and that’s what I did above.
You basically just do your regular smoky and then wet a brush to pick up the glitters and deposit them on your lid. You might want to do this before applying your foundation, concealer, powder and all that since the glitters are going to be all over your face.

Truth be told, I love glitter but obviously it’s hard to wear glitter makeup in your everyday life (for most of us anyway). When I feel like I need a bit of sparkle, I will go subtle with a very shimmery eyeshadow, which can still be very flattering and appropriate for most days.

When picking an eyeshadow colour with a lot of shimmer, I tend to lean towards golds as it warms up the skin and isn’t too much of a contrast on most people’s skin tones.

For me, I went EXTREMELY subtle with the shimmer. So subtle, that you can only see it when it catches the sunlight at certain angles. I lined my eyes just at the lash line and applied an overall base colour to my lids in a shade slightly darker than my own skin tone. I then used the gold shadow right on top of my lash line just to give the eyes a bit of sparkle. I finished the eyes off with mascara and a brightening liner on the lower water line.

I kept the rest of the face really simple – bronzer on the cheeks for the sun-kissed look and a soft pink lipstick.

I have a confession: I am not a glitter girl. I was looking frantically for glitter in my collection only to realize I don’t have any! The horror! If I want to add some pizzaz to my look, I tend to stick to glittery or sparkly eyeliners. It’s a cute yet subtle way to add color and some sparkle without going over the top. I like to keep the face matte and simple and just dust a wash of neutral colour over the lids. Apply eyeliner and mascara and boom! The tiny particles will flirt with the light behind your lashes. You can complement with a shimmery lipgloss by going for finer particles that can add some oomph and extra dimension to the lips without looking gritty.

Formulas with refined, tiny particles are much more wearable and elegant than chunky glitter, which can be hard to pull off on a day-to-day basis.
