Chanel Hints at a Possible Beauty Collaboration With Frank Ocean

Last week, Frank Ocean dropped a surprise track called “Chanel,” premiering it on the second episode of Ocean’s Beats 1 show, blonded RADIO. The lyrics cleverly play on the French fashion house’s interlocking C logo, with Frank crooning, “I see both sides like Chanel.”

As Vogue notes, this is one of the very few times the 29-year-old singer has made an overt shout-out to a fashion brand or label, aside from “Comme Des Garcons” from his visual album Endless or “Nikes” on Blonde. But aside from the reference to the brand logo and the song name, the single isn’t related to fashion at all — it speaks on Ocean’s bisexuality, with some people referring to the track as a “bi-anthem.”

So when Chanel posted some cryptic nods to Frank on its official Instagram page Wednesday, it got people talking: could a potential Frank Ocean x Chanel collab be in the works, specifically in the beauty sector?

The first post reads “We See Both Sides Like Frank,” while the second shows an image of the ocean and land with a Chanel No. 5 bottle in the picture. Both captions use #YouKnowMeAndYouDont (a hashtag used in Lily-Rose Depp’s Chanel No. 5 L’Eau campaign), #FrankOcean and #Chanel, which could very well mean the singer could be the face of a new Chanel fragrance campaign.

Given that Chanel has been pushing gender fluidity (they recently released a teaser video for their “Gabrielle” bag starring their first-ever male handbag ambassador, Pharrell Williams and launched their first gender-bending fragrance, Boy Chanel, as part of their Les Exclusifs perfumes, last year), this theory makes total sense. And with Frank’s absence from social media (aside from his minimal Tumblr posts), this could make for a very interesting campaign.

We’ve reached out to Chanel, who couldn’t give any details on the posts as of yet, but we will update as soon as we receive more info.
