Bold Under-Eye Liner is the Celeb Beauty Trend We’re Obsessed With Right Now

As fascinated as we are by Instagram beauty trends, sometimes, the best place to get makeup inspo is from one of the OG sources: celebs and their makeup artists.

And right now, there’s one trend in particular that we’re obsessing over, because it brings a pop of colour to your look in a totally unexpected way: bold under eye liner.

Olivia Munn rocked the trend last year, sporting green liner underneath her lash line at Vanity Fair’s 2016 Oscar party. The look, which was created by celeb makeup artist Patrick Ta, was an instant hit, and the actress sported it later on in the year in a blue shade to match her Prada bow.

“When you’re doing a really smudgy under-eye, it’s your chance to play with colour,” Ta told The Daily Mail of the look. “I just love monochromatic looks, so when I did it on Olivia, she was wearing an all-blue top with a lighter blue tie, so I really wanted to bring the colour from the outfit to the eye.”

Patrick also tried this look on Pretty Little Liars star Shay Mitchell for the launch of her Smashbox Cosmetics CoverShot palette. The teal hue was inspired by a similar look created by celeb makeup artist Porsche Cooper on model Joan Smalls.

Bold under-eye makeup has also become a fave of Janelle Monae, who has worn the look on several occasions, including a visit to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and the 2016 IFP Gotham Independent Film Awards. Other celeb fans include Margot Robbie, Mandy Moore and Vanessa Hudgens.

To get the look, Ta tells The Daily Mail its best to start off with a kohl liner in the waterline, then smudge it out with a pencil brush.

“Then go over it with a coordinating eyeshadow powder to set it and make sure it doesn’t smudge all over,” he says. Celeb MUA Tasha Reiko-Brown echoed these sentiments to Refinery29

“Lining the inner waterline and diffusing it down to under the lower lash line helps to open up small eyes,” she explained.

She also suggests using a gel eyeliner if you don’t have matching eyeliner and eyeshadow shades, as it doesn’t pull on skin and is easier to work with. Ready to try the trend? Shop these products to get the look:
