The Best Air Dry Products for Every Hair Type and Texture

As much as we love our blow dryers and styling tools, sometimes our hair just needs a break from all that heat — especially since it’s so damaging to our precious strands. And besides, who really wants to use a hair dryer in the summer, when it’s already so damn hot outside?

Luckily the air dry movement is going strong, with more and more people embracing that natural, effortlessly undone look — with a little help from a product or two, of course (unless you’re genetically blessed with hair that air dries perfectly on its own, which, in that case, makes us super jealous).

The key to choosing an air dry product is recognizing that one product does not fit all — no matter what the product description tells you. It’s common sense, really: how can one single product work the same for fine, straight hair and thick, coarse curls? It’s for this reason brands have (more recently) come out with multiple versions of an air dry product, to suit the needs of all hair types and textures.

Redken’s NBD No Blow Dry is a range that’s well-loved by many of the editors here at FASHION, and it comes in formulas for thin, medium and coarse hair. And Bumble and Bumble released its popular Bb. Don’t Blow It Fine (H)air Styler in a version for thick hair.

But when trying to navigate your way around products that aren’t explicitly specified for a certain hair texture, keep this in mind: if you have fine hair, look for a formula that’s lightweight as to not weigh strands down and lose volume. Have thick, coarse strands? Try something a bit heavier, which will give you lots of moisture (and in turn, reduce frizz). As for medium hair, well, something in between will do. And of course, if you have wavy or curly hair, you’ll want to use something that is specifically catered to your hair type.
