This might sound like a silly question, but can I use the same product to moisturize the dry skin on my hands and feet?
Not a silly question at all! It is possible to use a single moisturizer on both hands and feet if your feet aren’t very dry. Most hand creams are effective in moisturizing the skin, but tend to be absorbed rapidly and are less emollient overall since greasy hands are anything but functional. A hand cream that you’ll constantly reach for this winter: Diptyque Luxurious Hand Balm ($46, at Holt Renfrew), which contains apricot and organic argan oils to soften hands without excess slip.
Most foot creams contain heavier moisturizing ingredients that can typically be applied at night in order to maximize the results of the product. A solid bet for soft feet: L’Occitane Shea Butter Foot Cream ($30, at L’Occitane boutiques), which contains 15% shea butter, anti-inflammatory arnica extract and lavender essential oil to soothe dry, tired feet. Apply at night, throw on some cotton socks and wake up to supple feet!
I’d like to try out metallic eyeliner but don’t want to look overdone. Is it possible to make it work for daytime?
I feel it’s always admirable to want to mix up your day look—why should all experimentation and fun be reserved for nights out? Metallic liner is obviously eye-catching as a far as makeup trends go, but with the right shade and a few application modifications it can be just as appropriate for the office. A colour that I’m quite keen on is Lush Emotional Brilliance in “Quietly Motivated” ($23, lush.ca), which is a chocolate-bronze pigment that catches light without being too loud. Another ideal thing about this shade is that it’s flattering for all eye colours and it comes with a fine liner brush. Try layering it over a dark brown or black pencil liner smudged into your lashline—it’s a subtle way to work a metallic into your day look without appearing over-the-top gilded.

The busy woman’s dilemma, am I right? Morning routines are hectic enough as it is, but foregoing moisturizer in the winter isn’t easy—or comfortable—to get away with. Don’t leave your skin thirsty for hydration, as it will just lead to an itchy, scaly situation down the road. Try a lighter formula, such as Kiehl’s Crème de Corps Light-weight Body Lotion ($34, kiehls.ca), which contains moisture-binding glycerin and sweet almond oil. When your skin is still damp from the shower, apply lotion to lock moisture into the skin. Try applying a smaller amount, which will be easy to do since your skin will still be wet from showering, in order to ensure the product adequately soaks in. This way, you don’t have to sacrifice moisturized skin just to get out the door!
I want to try a neutral lip this fall but don’t want my skin to look too washed out—or like I’m wearing foundation on my lips. Can you suggest a product?
Neutral and extremely tonal makeup has been a huge trend seen in countless shows, but as with all makeup trends, we must try to interpret them to make them wearable for real life. Neutral lips can be very flattering and downright refreshing after a summer of bright lips, but you’re in the right mindset to want to avoid looking corpse-like, which is typically how foundation on your lips can look. Try opting for a semi-sheer lipstick in a shade that will enhance your natural lip colour, not mask it. (In the beauty world, this is often referred to as a “MLBB” shade – “My Lips But Better.”) A fantastic lipstick-balm hybrid formula that has a wide range of shades designed to mimic and enhance the natural tones found in lips of all colours is Dior Rouge Dior Nude Lip Blush ($36, sephora.com), shown here in “Trompe L’Oeil”.
I tend to tease my hair quite frequently but I’m worried it’s starting to cause breakage. Is there a better way to add volume?
Who doesn’t love a little lift at the crown? That being said, it’s best to end the backcombing now, before damage really does set in. Lucky for us, there are a slew of volumizing products that can make a world of difference to the your hair! A really fascinating creation with an appropriate name is Aveda Pure Abundance Hair Potion ($30, aveda.com), which starts as a powder in your hands and morphs into a liquid once in your hair.
